The Quality Control Technician is responsible for coordinating with Quality Control Administrators, the Quality Control Supervisor, the Quality Control Manager, Project Managers, the City of Ottawa, MTO-designated labs, and foremen on a daily basis to ensure correct aggregate samples are taken and delivered to the appropriate laboratory.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Asphalt sampling, granular sampling and compaction testing.
- Coring of asphalt and concrete.
- Plastic concrete testing and delivery of samples.
- Set rolling patterns for the rolling train in the paving crews in order to achieve optimum asphalt compaction.
- Collect asphalt samples based on pre-determined tonnages. Samples may be delivered to R.W. Tomlinson, Laboratories or designated MTO Lab. Results of these tests may be used in determining part of the pay factor.

- Conduct soil compaction testing and granular sampling. Soil compaction testing will be performed utilizing a nuclear densometer gauge
- Daily co-ordination of Quality Control activities.
- Communicate with Quality Control Administrators, Quality Control Manager, Project Managers and foremen on a daily basis to co-ordinate the day’s events.
- Daily meetings are held between Project Managers in order to communicate what work is to take place the following day.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Technical college diploma in civil, construction or geotechnical engineering, or additional 4 years’ experience
- Concrete testing and nuclear densometer experience
- Working knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Word programs
WORKING CONDITIONS
- A mixture of office and field conditions
- Must be physically fit
- Must valid driver’s license
- Exposure to all elements – summer heat, rain etc.
- Occasional overtime work is to be expected during nights and weekends.
