The Chemical Technician is a multidisciplinary member within the Tomlinson Industrial Waste Division. An ideal Chemical Technician is a team member who must complete work activities under minimal supervision. 

  

Job Location: 5555 Power Road, Ottawa ON 

Hours:6:00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES DUTIES 

Safety 

  • Promote a safe work culture and is accountable for the safety of the crew as they work around chemical waste. They must understand the responsibilities of their role; ensuring that proper PPE is used to complete the assigned task(s).  

    • Knowing, understanding and complying with various safety regulations (Occupational Health and Safety Act) and Company safety policies and procedures 

    • Actively participate in daily safety tailgate meetings 

    • Conduct daily checks of stored waste at the end of shift 

    • Know how to follow the contingency plan in the case of an emergency 

  • Waste Identification & Packaging: Identify, segregate, classify, consolidate, package, and label hazardous and non‑hazardous materials in compliance with legislation.  

  • Transportation & Safety Compliance: Load, secure, and transport materials; perform vehicle inspections; and follow all safe work practices and regulatory requirements. 

  • Documentation & Customer Service: Accurately complete manifests and waste paperwork while ensuring customer needs are met regarding hazardous waste disposal. 

  • Other duties, as assigned: 

    • Processing, treatment and disposal of Lab-Pack waste, 

    • Collecting samples from incoming waste containers, 

    • Collecting samples of various tanks on site, 

    • Environmental Testing of samples in the laboratory, 

    • Bench testing of samples, 

    • Act as a first responder for incoming spill calls, 

    • Be part of the spill response team, 

    • Provide technical advice to team members, 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Frequent physical work 

  • Exposure to the elements – summer heat, rain, cold, etc. 

  • Long hours may occasionally be required, evening and weekend work 

  • Be part of the On-Call Rotation team. 

  

 

EXPERIENCE 

  • University degree or College diploma in Chemistry or Environmental Sciences 

    • OR in the absence of a degree or a diploma have a combination of relative education and experience with chemical work in in the industrial/hazardous waste industry;  

    • OR a minimum 3 year similar chemical work experience within industrial/hazardous waste industry. 

  • Must have class G license with a clean abstract and reliable transportation. 

  • Eligibility to get a Reliability level security clearance (5 years of verifiable history) 

  • Knowledge of Ontario Environmental Regulations (Reg 347) and usage of RPRA database would be an asset, 

  • Knowledge in TDGA would be an asset, 

  • NFPA 472 or HAZWOPER would be an asset. 

  

COMPENSATION INFORMATION 

The expected wage for this position is $28.00 - $30.00 per hour.  Placement within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including qualifications and experience.
