Role description:

We are seeking an Intermediate Transportation Design Engineer to join our dynamic Ottawa Office. The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in roadway and transit corridor design, excellent communication, and proven experience delivering preliminary and detailed engineering projects. This position is primarily focused on the design, development, and delivery of transportation infrastructure, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams to create innovative, sustainable mobility solutions.

Candidates who may not fit every requirement but demonstrate strong potential, initiative, and willingness to grow are encouraged to apply.

Role accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead and deliver the functional, preliminary, and detailed design phases for a diverse and impactful range of transportation infrastructure projects, from municipal roads and highways to LRT/BRT corridors and active transportation facilities. You’ll shape the places people move through every day, applying creative engineering solutions and modern design tools such as MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D to turn concepts into buildable realities.

You will prepare and review design documents, construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for roadways, intersections, and transit facilities, while using road safety and traffic operations analyses to make informed, user-focused design decisions. Collaborating closely with other engineering disciplines, you’ll coordinate utility, drainage, and grading designs to deliver cohesive, optimized outcomes that meet project goals and community needs. Your work will adhere to the highest standards and guidelines (TAC, Ontario Traffic Manuals, MTO, City of Ottawa requirements), giving you the satisfaction of producing compliant, resilient infrastructure.

You will play a hands-on role in the full project lifecycle: supporting tender package preparation, responding to contractor inquiries during construction, and performing rigorous quality checks to ensure technical accuracy and completeness prior to submittal. You’ll prepare technical reports, present design solutions, and independently lead small projects or tasks, gaining visibility and ownership over meaningful project elements that advance your professional impact.

Beyond technical delivery, you will mentor junior staff and shape the team’s technical best practices, helping to grow the next generation of designers. You’ll maintain strong client relationships, participate in design meetings, and deliver engaging technical presentations, all within a collaborative environment where innovative thinking and practical problem-solving are valued. This role offers the chance to influence real-world transportation systems and build a portfolio of projects that improve mobility and community connectivity.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEO or eligible to obtain P.Eng. within 12 months
  • 3-6 years of direct experience in transportation design including municipal roads, highways, LRT/BRT, intersection improvements, and active transportation infrastructure; roundabout and protected intersection design experience considered an asset
  • Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D
  • Working knowledge of specialized software such as Synchro and AutoTurn to support design tasks
  • Strong understanding of relevant technical standards including TAC Geometric Design Guide, Ontario Traffic Manuals, City of Ottawa design standards and policies, and the Ontario Highway Traffic Act
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple design tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
