Job SummaryThe Driver reports to the Kitchen Services Supervisor and plays a key operational role in supporting Belong Ottawa’s drop-in day programs across multiple sites. The Driver is responsible for safely transporting food, supplies, and donated goods between all three Belong Ottawa locations in downtown Ottawa; maintaining the organization’s delivery van in clean, safe, and reliable condition; and supporting the effective flow, organization, and storage of donations. The Driver will also assist with waste management duties and may occasionally support Kitchen Assistant and or custodial responsibilities as required. This position contributes directly to the smooth functioning of our programs and ensures participants receive consistent, reliable access to essential resources.

Duties and Responsibilities1. Transportation & Delivery
· Safely operate the Belong Ottawa delivery van to transport food, supplies, and other materials between Centre 454, The Well, St. Luke’s Table, and pick-up and storage sites.
· Load and unload goods in a safe and organized manner, ensuring items are handled with care.
· Maintain accurate logs of deliveries and ensure timely completion of daily routes.
· Communicate proactively with staff across all locations regarding delivery schedules or delays.
2. Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
· Perform daily inspections of the van, including checking fuel and fluids, tires, lights, and other safety components.
· Keep the vehicle clean, organized, and in good working order at all times.
· Report mechanical issues immediately and coordinate servicing or repairs as directed.
· Ensure compliance with all safety, licensing, and operational protocols, and in accordance with Ontario’s driving regulations and the City of Ottawa driving and parking guidelines. Any infractions parking or driving infractions are the responsibility of the Driver.
3. Donations Receiving, Sorting & Storage
· Receive donated goods from individuals, community partners, and local organizations.
· Sort and categorize donations, ensuring safe handling and appropriate storage.
· Maintain organized storage rooms, shelves, and bins, ensuring inventory is rotated and accessible to staff.
· Communicate with program staff about available donated items and their intended use.
4. Waste Management
· Put out dumpsters and bins on designated garbage and recycling days for pick-up.
· Assist in maintaining clean and safe exterior areas around waste disposal zones.
· Report any sanitation concerns to the appropriate supervisor, Program Supervisor or Kitchen Services Supervisor.
5. Program Support & Kitchen Assistance
· Assist Kitchen Assistant staff as needed, including moving food items, organizing supplies, and occasional basic food preparation or cleaning tasks.
· Provide general support at drop-in sites when operational needs arise.
6. Health, Safety, and Mission Alignment
· Follow all organizational health and safety protocols, including safe food handling, WHMIS practices, and vehicle safety standards.
· Interact respectfully and professionally with staff, volunteers, students, and participants.
· Uphold Belong Ottawa’s mission, values, and commitment to a trauma-informed, client-centered approach.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Required Qualifications
· Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with a clean driving abstract.
· Demonstrated experience operating a commercial vehicle safely in urban environments, including during winter conditions.
· Ability to load, unload, and transport boxes and supplies of varying weights.
· Strong organizational and time management skills.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team setting.
· Effective communication skills and sensitivity to the needs of people experiencing homelessness, poverty, trauma, addictions, mental illness, discrimination, or other systemic barriers.
· Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.
· Ability to maintain professionalism and problem-solve during stressful or unexpected situations.
Other Qualifications
· Minimum 6 months experience working with marginalized communities or vulnerable populations (paid or volunteer).
· Compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental, and trauma-informed approach.
· Experience receiving, organizing, or distributing goods is considered an asset.
· Experience in a kitchen, warehouse, or program support environment is an asset (training will be provided).
Physical Abilities
· Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy boxes and supplies on a regular basis.
· Ability to enter and exit a vehicle frequently throughout the workday.
· Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move around storage areas as needed.
· Work environments vary daily and may include indoor and outdoor duties, including in winter conditions
Working Conditions and Benefits
Pay: $21.85/hour
Full-Time, 37.5 hours/week.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00AM-3:00PM
